Chad Smith Assistant to Executive Vice President

Bro. Chad Smith brings 16years of higher education experience to PGAUF, including athletic administration, coaching, counseling, academic advising, student activities and development.

Smith was formerly the Coordinator of Athletics and Intramurals at Thomas Nelson Community College (Hampton, Va.), where he led and coordinated efforts by the college to become a new member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Prior to this, all teams at the college competed at the club level.

Under Smith's administrative direction, the college baseball team joined the NJCAA in 2015, followed by the women's basketball team in 2017. Smith also served as the head baseball coach (2012-2016) and associate head baseball coach (2017-2018). During his coaching tenure, three of his players were named NJCAA All-Americans and eight were named to the All-Region X Team for Division III. His first two wins as an official member of the NJCAA, came against Region XX competitors Prince George's Community College and Montgomery College.

In addition to his coaching accomplishments, seven student-athletes were selected to the VA-SID (Virginia Sports Information Directors) Academic All-State Team for achieving a 3.25 GPA or higher during the 2016-2018 seasons when Smith was serving as the Coordinator and academic advisor for student-athletes.

Prior to his time at Thomas Nelson, Smith coached basketball (1997-98) and baseball (1997-99) at Woodside High School (Newport News, Va.). Smith was a high school and collegiate student-athlete himself and played as a middle infielder for the baseball team at Norfolk State University (1988-89). With the Spartans, he had two teammates who played on major league baseball rosters and four others who played for either minor league or independent professional teams.

An advocate for two-year college athletics, Smith has served as the Region X-Division III Women's Basketball Chair (2017-18) and is a member of National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA). He received a scholarship from the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics (NACDA) in 2017 to attend the national convention. He graduated from Norfolk State University in 1992 with a degree in political science. He earned a master's degree in college student personnel administration from James Madison University in 1997.
