Hollie Baker Sr. '63 Executive Board Member

Dr. Baker married Clara Eley (deceased 2007) in 1965. They were blessed with three lovely children: Staretta Benjamin (Henderson); Tamara Baker-Thomas (Nathaniel); Hollie Baker Jr. (Lauren), and six grandchildren: Landon, Hollie Baker III, Sydney, Olivia, Kensley and Kennedy. He attended elementary schools in Portsmouth, VA. and Raleigh, NC. He graduated from IC Norcom high school 1960, and received a BS degree in mathematics from the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College (Norfolk State University (NSU)) in 1965. He taught mathematics at IC Norcom high school from 1965 – 1969, and after further academic study he received an MST degree in 1970 from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He joined the faculty at Norfolk State University in 1970 and retired as Professor of Mathematics in 2005 after 35 years of service. In 1980 he earned a doctoral degree from the University of Virginia. His experiences as an instructor of mathematics at NSU include the following: Chairman of the Mathematics Department 1980 – 1984, Coordinator of the trigonometry curriculum, and Director of the DNIMAS honors program (Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences) which offered a full scholarship to worthy students 1987 – 1990. He was also selected to Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities; Developer of a Texas Instrument calculator class; Was a member of NAM (National Association of America); and attended and participated in many conferences seminars and symposiums regarding mathematics and curriculum development. He is a member of the Zion Bethel United Church of Christ Portsmouth, VA. His church activities include: trustee board member, Adult Sunday school teacher, member male chorus, mid-day bible study for seniors and the Men’s Fellowship. The following are the charitable organizations that he support or is an active participant: American Red Cross, Medicines Sans Frontiers Doctors Without Borders, Our Daily Bread Ministries, Norfolk State University Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association, NAACP, March of Dimes, WHRO, American Cancer Society, Care, Habitat for Humanity, UNCF, St. Judes Children Hospital, Zion Bethel United Church of Christ, Smile Train, Make a Wish, National Urban League, NFCR, AARP Foundation, Union Mission Ministries, Operation Smile, and the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
